Lion King the Musical
The Lion King to take
me to my childhood
The Lion King is the
musical based on Disney’s Lion King movie of
the same name which opened in 1994. The musical first played in the US and then
opened at London’s Lyceum Theatre in
1999. The
show has been performed in London ever since. The film itself left a memorable
mark in my childhood, so I decided to see the musical version of it to check if
it will affect me as much as the film did in the past.
The theatre was fully crowded. I had my friend with me and together we went back to our childhood days. We had seats right at the top of the theatre. Sitting right at the back, gave us the chance to see everyone with a bird’s eye view. I really like seeing the moment everybody suddenly turns silent, when the play starts. This is again what happened before Lion King the musical began.
The play took about
two hours and a half and I didn’t even look at the time. It took me a journey
to my childhood, as I expected. When the film Lion King began to play in
Istanbul, where I was born and raised, I was three or four years old so, I
don’t really remember what I watched. But I do remember how excited my elder
sister and I were. We were completely fascinated by the film.
The director of the musical is Julie Taymor, who became the first woman to win the Tony Award for directing a musical. She also won a Tony for costume design for the same play.
She showed her
professionalism with her team in the Lion King performance. The players were so
skillful and could convey to the audience that they are acting with enthusiasm.
The musical kept my
eyes literally open with the lighting, the music, and especially with the
costumes. The way players carried the costumes made us feel that all the
animals in the play were real. It was as genuine as it could be.
It is obvious that the
play is a result of a hard work of an enthusiastic team. I totally recommend
everyone to see this glorious effort.
