Matilda the musical
Matilda's surreal power is worth seeing
If you need something out of this world,
Matilda’s surreal power is worth seeing
It’s almost always very difficult to choose
an event that is worth seeing in London. But that being said, the theatre scene
here makes it easier more often than not. There are quite a lot of successful plays
and Matilda stands out as one of the musicals that never lets you down in
London’s West End.
Matilda the musical is based on Roald Dahl’s
novel of the same name. Its premiere was held on 24 November 2011 at the Cambridge
Theatre. The musical’s director is Matthew Warchus who won the Laurence Oliver
Best Director award in 2012 for Matilda.
The composer is Tim Minchin who, in my
opinion, also did a very impressive job. And the cast, especially the children,
no matter how little they were, acted like actors with years of experience.
Matilda, as a precocious 5-year-old girl,
has special powers like telekinesis that helps her deal with the problems that
she comes upon in her everyday life, some caused by her family and some by the
people at school.
Even though I know some scenes weren’t that
believable and seeing myself as a relatively realistic person, I actually
really enjoyed the play. I realized that I needed something not from the real
world, but from a surreal one. This was what Matilda the musical provided. Seeing
her behaviour definitely gave me a much different perspective of things,
widening my eyes in ways that otherwise you often wouldn’t be able to find in
the real world.
But even though Matilda isn’t real, there
were still many children from the play other than her who gave me the same
feeling. Their movements were in rhythm so perfectly that when you kept your
eyes on them, you realized that you lose so much by not watching others, by not
observing the whole picture.
Among the crowd inside the theatre, the
majority were mainly parents with their children. During the play, there had
been some uneasiness between a couple of parents that created a bit of unrest among
the audience. This was the first time I witnessed such a serious disturbance
during a musical. So, I experienced just how disturbing it can be when someone
makes unwanted noise in the middle of a play.
Overall, I do recommend that people go and
see Matilda. Especially if you have kids, seeing their reactions throughout the
musical would make it even more enjoyable.
